Milano shifting problem (was RE: my shifter disengages when i go in reverse somtimes.)
I'd have to disagree with mounts. I don't see how the front mount would
affect the trans. The linkage is not connected to it and the drive shaft
would take up any movement before it actually moved the transaxle. If the
rear mounts were loose enough to distort the shift linkage, he would get the
classic "thunk" on acceleration/deceleration.
The Isostatic linkage is a classic Milano trouble spot. First place I
usually look is the shift bushing underneath. I think Fred mentioned a
while back this wears due to resting your hand on the shift lever while
driving. When this wears the car doesn't go into gear all the way and pops
under normal flex movement.
So now he has 2-3 places to look.

I'd bet it was the transmission mounts, and possibly rear engine mount.
When they wear out they allow the transaxle/engine to move around
enough to acctuate the shifter. Take a look at the gear shift when you
are driving around... does it jerk about under acceleration?
