Yes, there was a reason. The main line was S-shaped and the bearings that
came out were showing very uneven wear. The worst bearing had heavy wear on
one side of the oil journal and no wear on the other - that's bad news. We
considered the effects of the align bore vs. lower timing chain and decided
it was an acceptable trade. The very minimum of material was removed, only
enough to bring it back true.
The important thing is that the engine, which was really sloppy for only 70k
miles, will be tight, true, and balanced.
