Heating oil is very similar to road diesel, usually no anti-gel additives.
It is, of course, illegal in the U.S. to use fuel that is not road taxed.
Back in
late seventies and early eighties the GM diesels were very popular with
farmers
and heavy off road equipment operators for their ability to use untaxed
diesel
fuel.

A good friend of mine ran his diesel Jetta on the heating oil left in his
underground storage tank in his yard after he switched his heat to natural
gas. No ill effects noted in his beater daily driver Jetta.
