Re: IRS defined (not tax related)
I have followed this thread with interest. While I have no comment on the
issue of IRS "purity" with or without swaybars, etc., I submit that the
main advantage of IRS is a favorable sprung/unsprung weight ratio (see
examples below). With this criterion in mind, De Dion is almost as good as
IRS, while giant I beams, etc. are not. Fred Puhn makes this point in his
book on handling:
solid axle: 3.54
De Dion: 4.00
IRS: 4.55
De Dion, inboard brakes: 5.66
IRS, inboard brakes: 6.69
(all rear suspension with coil, not leaf, springs)
Note that this is a duplicate of an earlier post in which (sorry) I failed
