Subject: '85 Spider Fan/Engine Mount
Digesters:
My fan exploded. Fred suggested checking the engine mounts. They seem
fine. Engine does not move when shaken by hand or by reving engine. Any
suggestions?
Should I bother replacing the fan shroud which was destroyed by the
fan? Thanks.
I wouldn't, and didn't. Go to "I Saluti's" web site, and follow their
instructions, more or less, to install an electric fan ahead of the
radiator. My fan mounted with a couple of short pieces of hardware store
angle steel top and bottom, instead of the straps they use, and I ran a
switch through a relay to control it.
Making that conversion removes the possibility of a fan blade going thru
the radiator, cuts power drag at speed, supplies full cooling in hot summer
traffic when you really need it, opens up the area between the engine and
radiator, and simplifies working in that area. I haven't found a downside.
The Spider fan is from a 3XX series BMW, but there are many which would
work as well or better, plenty on eBay. An electric fan was the first
accessory I bought for the resurrecting Berlina.
Peace,
Joe
