They are great for just the things you mentioned... If you know what 
some item is supposed to sound like, but it sounds different, you might 
have found a problem.   For instance they are great for telling if fuel 
injectors are firing (a very disticnt "pink" can be heard when they 
trigger.)

They are good for finding small exhaust leaks too...  pull the end off 
the scope, and direct the tube at a suspect joint.   Makes it easy to 
here the "puff, puff, puff" of a leak over the normal exhaust noise.

I use mine frequently.
