It's a very simple safety precaution.
If you put a wrench on the positive terminal and accidentally contact any
part of the frame or engine with the other end you will be doing some arc
welding. This will not happen with the negative terminal.

Contrary to what someone else stated: if you disconnect the positive
terminal nothing will happen if you lay it against the frame of the car, the
circuit is no longer connected.
