Starter solenoids
Older cars had inertia type starter pinion engagement and a separate,
pretty hefty starter relay. Some bright guy figured out you could combine a
positive engagement starter solenoid with a contacter that carried the big
current, operating simultaneously. Positive engagement starters are now
universal as far as I know. In the old days the starter pinion could get
stuck in the ring gear if the inertia return spring was a bit tired. You
could tap the starter with a mallet, or rock the car with the brake off and
preferably fourth gear engaged.
