Subject: Diagnosing Starter Solenoid?

>My '73 GTV has a starter problem that is accentuated by cold
temperatures. The symptom is that when you hit the starter, it clicks and
spins up, but does not engage the flywheel.
Does this sound like a solenoid failure?
Thanks, //kct, Powell, TN<

Replace the starter drive (Bendix). The problem is not the solenoid. If the
starter runs, the solenoid is working.
This is the same problem Ford had back in the 60's. The starter drive has an
over ride clutch built into it that allows the starter to drive the engine but
does not allow the engine to drive the starter. When this clutch gets worn or
dirty, it slips and all you get is a "Zing" when you hit the starter.
