Re: Spider clutch issue

Digestives-I recently replaced the clutch and throwout on one of my
Spiders, and found that the failed throwout bearing had actually eaten
the "fingers" of the pressure plate. It was not really a surprise,
however, because my symptom was a loud squealing when the car was in
neutral but the clutch was out, and the car was always trying to move
forward...also, hard to shift. (Well, actually, IMPOSSIBLE to shift
unless you were either moving, or had the engine turned off.) I had some
vibrations as well. Unlike some of the local guys who take less than a
week to do a clutch job, I'm on the 6 month plan. Nearly finished wth the
job I started in October... Oh, I also found a sloppy pilot bushing for
the tranny, and I replaced the rear main while I was in there. The diff
pinion nut was really loose, too. (about 3 turn's worth of loose) Moral
of the story- you're probably fine for now, but plan on a tranny removal
at some point in the forseeable future. HTH, Patrick Hood, near SUNNY
Bellevue, WA.
