Exhaust Systems

With all the heartache I've read about sourcing an exhaust system, I offer
the following thoughts......

I've had a few systems made for various cars over the years and only
occasionally used "specialist" Alfa suppliers. An exhaust system is a
rather simple piece of kit and even the specialist supplier items can be of
dubious accuracy. The overall length can vary considerably simply by
slipping each piece into its mate a different amount, so I wouldn't lose any
sleep over a few millimetres (32nds for the non-metricated) overall length.
Further, most replacement mufflers won't be dimensionally identical to the
original item, and I'd guess that Alfa even had different OEM suppliers at
times for the same model cars. Heaven knows they did for lots of other
components.

Having said this, I have had one custom system which had a consistent drone
at speed until we moved the resonator about 2 inches further aft, and
another "off-the-shelf" ANSA system which simply wouldn't fit without
thumping the floor all the time

The most important consideration for me is to have the exhaust system
made/modified to include flanges at all joints (for the inevitable donut
replacements on Alfettas). This saves so much pain, cramps and skinned
knuckles !!!

I know others who swear by braided flex inserts where the single pipe starts
and more rigid mounting of the system downstream of this.
