RE: wedge
As I said, Fred told me this trick when I was trying to get my first
Spider back together after replacing a head gasket:
It's tough to not have the wedge slide behind the tensioner when you're
trying to insert the tensioner back in. Using a tap and die set, thread
the hole in the wedge so that you can screw a SAE bolt into it. I think
the proper thread is 6-32, but I could be wrong on that. At any rate,
before you put the tensioner back in, put the wedge in, hold it up to
the hole in head for the tensioner bolt and then thread the SAE bolt in
from the outside just enough to hold the wedge in place. Use the bolt
to hold the wedge in place while you slide the tensioner in place.
Remove the bolt (make sure the hole for the nipple on the tensioner bolt
is centered) and replace the actual tensioner bolt, making sure the
nipple on the bolt goes into the hole. Voila!
Pretty slick. Thanks, Fred!

Bill,
i spent a terrible hour trying to get that wedge back in. I was
really pissed that it was so hard. Is there an easy way... other than
NEVER letting it come out again?
thanks,
joel lewis
