re: REPCO F1 engine
In AD V9 #98 Rex said "the aluminum BOP V-8 being in
Formula 1 racing. The REPCO-Brabhams in 1966 and 1967 used this block
in 3 liter form, with specially made SOHC aluminum heads in 1966 (Denny
Hulme was World Champion) and DOHC heads in 1967 (less reliable and no
match for Lotus-Cosworth)."
Are you sure about this? I've seen one of the blocks (many years ago) from one of these engines, and they were Magnesium, although I'm not sure if this was the ill-fated DOHC engine that they developed for the next season. My REPCO engine book is at home so I can't check at the moment.
I know one of the guys (Bill Freame) from the Fiat club here in Melbourne who used to work for REPCO (and has many of the bits left over from the engines) so I guess I can ask him. For those interested, over the years the accountants slowly destroyed REPCO down to the point where it was virtually nothing, although it has been resurrected in name as an autoparts store here in Australia now. Bill Freame took over the pistons manufacturing section from REPCO and now makes specialised pistons for just about anything.
Warren Reid,
Melbourne Australia.
