GTV6 CD Player
Hi All,
I know this isn't the Car Audio Digest, but this question *is* Alfa
related. I recently installed a Blaupunkt Santa Fe CD player in my 84 GTV6.
I chose this unit for its simple controls, a rotary volume control, and
largely for its all-too-unusual *adult* styling that seemed appropriate in
the Alfa (as opposed to a slammed Civic with coffee can muffler extension).
Upon my first drive, I was very disappointed in the unit's sensitivity to
road shock - a CD would mis-track in response to even modest road roughness.
The Pioneer unit that I had replaced (due to its inability to eject a disc
except when stone cold) only mis-tracked over severe road irregularities
(poorly maintained railroad crossings). My car has a completely stock
suspension (no Koni's or sport springs) and I recently overhauled the entire
front suspension with new ball joints, bushings, etc.
Crutchfield's customer service was quite good - they were willing to
credit me for return of the Blaupunkt unit or replace the unit with a
comparable model by another maker. Because I really liked the looks of the
Blaupunkt, I opted for another Blaupunkt, hoping that the first was
defective. While marginally better than the first unit, the new one skips
almost as badly. I'm still within the window for a refund from Crutchfield,
which they committed to if the new unit proved unacceptable.
The question is this - Has anyone recently installed a CD player in a
GTV6 and found its shock resistance acceptable? If so, what model? I'm
tempted to go with a new Pioneer (ugly or not), based on the original unit's
performance, but I suspect that each model is manufactured by the
subcontractor du jour, limiting one's ability to extrapolate from
model-to-model or year-to-year. I like the looks of the Nakamichi line, but
I would imagine that I'd pay considerably more than the $170 cost of the
Blaupunkt. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
