1991 164 starting problems -- good news and bad news

the bad news first -- it continues to run _very_ poorly when stone cold, as
in the morning after a snow or ice storm (both of which we've had in the
past 48 hours.)

the good news is that the no-start after it's been cooling down for a
couple of hours seems to be conquered.

sunday, after factoring all the suggestions and examining materials on
hand, i decided to start by examining the inside of the distributor cap.

the cap and rotor are worn, but not so badly as to account for the no-start
condition. i'll replace them along with the plug wires, but i didn't
seriously believe they were causing the condition. i then examined the
electrical connections under the hood; i removed the connector to the AFM
and hosed the contacts down with contact cleaner, and sprayed some other
exposed connectors (grounds and the like.) the connector for the cold start
sender on the thermostat housing was connected, and more than a little
difficult to access, i hosed some contact cleaner in its general direction
and moved on.

that was it. the car no longer has the no-start condition. as i said, it
still runs very badly on a stone cold startup, which seems to be an
insufficient fuel condition that lasts about a minute.
