Duetto paint code
Steve Schaffer writes in for a friend: "...I have written to the woman
at the
archives twice to confirm "Graphite Grey 716". The cross-reference
codes
shown on those lists apply to old lacquer paint numbers. They are
trying to
computer match an Alfa grey, which is close, but not close. I deal with
colors on buildings all the time. I believe their computer is giving
them
some contemporary Alfa mix."

I really can't help with the color but strongly suggest to your friend
he remove something on the car with a good sample of the gray - and also
hasn't been in the light much. The inside of the gas cap cover should be
pretty pristine. I'd then dip my finger in the remixed paint, put a good
dollop on the gas cap and go out into the noon day sun with my
engraver's glass and compare.
It is virtually impossible for the computers to give an accurate match
in say a modern enamel or urethane which was originally lacquer by just
using the original formula (assuming it is even available).
One of the reasons I've switched to DuPont's ChromaOne urethane is a
paint dealer couldn't match a color on a client's car in enamel and had
to go to the more expensive high-solids of DuPont's urethane.
Not sure how clamped down the paint 'laws' are in Montana, but in CA
they change frequently. It is not unusual for formulas for an
'identical' color to change even in the midst of painting a car should
one need to buy another quart or gallon.
Gray's are surprisingly one of the most difficult colors to match.
