Karl,
You might start interviewing Saab specialists.
The mechanic I use in Omaha, NE (European Motors Inc.) is a Saab guy and he 
seems quite familiar with the ZF Auto trans in my 164. He's told me some of 
the Saab 9000s used the same box and have had similar failures.
