Spider gas chamber

I was interested to see someone's post about exhaust
fumes in a Spider. My '78 spider recently has started
doing this, and I can't figure out why. Don't know if
it's the same thing, actually, but recently I get a
strong gas smell (sometimes) that seems to be coming
from the exhaust end of things, not the front of the
car. It can be so strong as to make me dizzy
almost--and that's with the top down. Nothing seems to
be leaking. Any ideas? Car idles too high, too. Any
connection? (Actually, I'm just assuming the idle is
too high. It settles down to about 1,000-1,200 RPM
when warm, but is usually between 1,600-2,000 RPM when
cold. Seems high to me, or is that normal?)

P.S. Also, thanks to the people who responded to my
question about Spider-Point. Generally the response
was that they are good but a bit pricey. That may not
be deserved, however. I found the part I wanted at
another supplier (also in Germany) that someone
recommended for 11.9 euros, I think. The same part at
Spider-Point was 5.11 euros.
