164 stepper motor fun

so in about 4 hours, using the tedious dash/center console procedure (i
didn't feel like cutting up my glovebox area), i have got the stepper
motor assembly out of my 164 and down onto the bench in the basement. some
comments and questions:

1) the instructions for accessing the steppers from Alfapro were mostly
very good. there was one additional nut on a stud underneath driver's side
instrument cluster that i didn't see mentioned in the instructions. i found
it before i broke something trying to pull the dash out.

2) the instructions also didn't mention using care with the spring c clip
holding the one defroster tube in place. it sprang somewhere, i'm going to
need to find it before i reassemble things.

3) the stepper gearcases are hard to open. i've not got one open yet.
anybody have any helpful hints? the small end seems to be binding up on the
both of them; i can get the wider end opened up a bit.

4) i think the very long #2 philips called for in the alfa pro instructions
isn't strictly necessary, although it did make one or two screws relating
to the gear cases easier to get to.

5) final question: when removing the stepper motors, i inadvertantly popped
a while thingamabob that looks like it has a temp sensor in the end loose
from somewhere; it's attached to the wiring harness for the steppers. it
doesn't appear broken, but i don't see where it goes back into the dash
area. anybody know where this bit goes?

thanks,
  richard
