diagnosing 164 motor mount problems

ok, i have a 1991 164 (base model, automatic, if that matters).

the rear section of the plastic RF inner fender has been cut away to clear
the engine pulleys, clear evidence of a past motor mount problem, if i
understand correctly.

how do i go about determining if the motor mount problem was ever
corrected, and which motor mounts if any are in need of replacement?

if at all possible, i'd like to get an inner fender without a cut out in
place before the snows come to keep junk out of the drive belt area of the
motor. i'd like to fix any existing motor mount problems before i do that,
for obvious reasons.

thanks,
  richard
