Starter Solenoid

Paul-

1974 models are the only ones with a starter relay. This is because of the seat belt interlock system found only on '74s. The interlock control unit disables the relay when the seat belts are not fastened, but the relay does function in the desired manner to eliminate heavy amp loads through the ignition switch. Most 74 interlock systems have been bypassed somewhere along the line since the control units often failed rendering the starter inoperative. The only thing you should do on your car is to make sure the interlock control unit has been properly bypassed. The unit enables the starter relay by supplying it with ground. You can make a short pigtail and install it from the ground connection on the relay to the relay mounting screw (ground) on the firewall. Then, if you wish, you can remove the control unit altogether (it's located under the dash to the right of the glovebox).
