roll bars (not anti roll bars)

As to the roll bars that are installed in convertibles, are the street
versions any help at all for safety?  Itr seems to me they could actually
hinder rather then help, if you get wacked by a street roll bar in a roll
over (which actually seem rather rare in cars).
