Is it possible there was one there and mashed so tight on there it didn't
come off.   If this is the case, the new one wouldn't seal properly anyway
and cause the same result.

It's a pain to have to do it again (and redrain all the oil from the trans),
but I would take it out again and poke around and see if the original one
stayed in-situ.
