Inboard brakes



Indeed, unsprung weight is the reason. As for efficiency, the brakes could care less about where they are. Inboard rear brakes on a street are OK because they don't do a lot so heat isn't much of a problem and the hefty drive shafts safely transmit the braking torque as they do driving torque. Inboard front brakes are a dumb idea. As was pointed out, the half shafts you need add back unsprung weight and they break!

The E type Jag is another inboard disc brake design that works well, now they really did have beefy half shafts as they served as upper rear suspension links! Colin Chapman would've loved 'em.
