Re: alfa-digest V8 #1132
Ah, VIR. I went to college in Danville VA, and spent a lot of time at
VIR. (this was in '66-'67) I used to 'help' Horst Kwech with his Alfa
Romeo GTAs in those days. You know, move 'em from the paddock area to
the false grid -swap the plugs for new ones just before the race. That
kind of thing. Got to drive around the track a number of times in
various GTAs - my love of Alfas goes waaaay back. Also got the fastest
ride of my life (to date) on that track. Doctor Dick Thompson squired
me around the track several laps in his Lola Chevy once (wouldn't let
me drive it though). We must've hit 165 on the long straight. The new
track looks a lot different. Things were pretty primitive in those
days, but they really had a turnout. Thousands came for the spring and
fall SCCA events. As I recall, the track, though in Virginia, could
only be accessed from within North Carolina. You drove south from the
main Virginia east west highway (forget the number) turn south, go
through some little tiny Carolina hamlet, make a left just after the
town, and then drive back north, cross the state line and into the race
track. I remember one race weekend borrowing an ex-school mate's Jag
MkII, and being stopped by the NC. state troopers as I crossed the line
coming out of the track. The officer, upon seeing my Virginia driver's
license, and where I was from (near Washington D.C.) commented "Boy,
yew come from a part of Virginia whirr the liquor flows lahk wine. You
git back o'var in Virginia ta have yer' wreck." I don't see how he
could tell. I wasn't THAT drunk!
Ah, memories of a callow and misspent youth. That was a long time
ago....... in a state far away.

Thanks Dana -
Brings back forty year old memories of touring VIR in Bob Grossman's
Ferrari. Ah, childhood and to be young again.

Good job, Dana. I thought for a minute you missed me getting black
flagged
for loud exhaust on the parade laps. Then I noticed that video was
last May
not 2 weeks ago.

I've posted two short clips of in-car video from Virginia International
Raceway's south course on the Mid-Atlantic Alfa Romeo Club's web site.
