what kind of adhesives do folks use to hold these in place. i've already
demonstrated to myself that ordinary automotive silicone is completely
ineffective for this job.

3-M Weatherstrip Adhesive is good stuff.  We used to use it to hold enduro 
bikes together, but it holds weatherstrip (surprise!) like grim death.
