Overheating Spider saga continues

Al wrote "While I continue to monitor why my 86 Spider maintains a
temperature between 193 and 213, I've noticed the smell of anti freeze when
I re-start the car after it has been warmed up."

The shop manual for my 91 Spider Veloce states that the thermostat starts to
open at 195 degrees F and is fully open at 203 degrees F. an mine will run
212-215 degrees F with the air conditioning on. This is measured with a
thermocouple at the temperature sending unit. My high temperature light also
comes on at 212 degrees F. I think the sending unit which is located in the
head is bad.

I like Al have a new water pump(the old one had 197,000 miles on it)and
thermostat and I flushed the radiator with cleaner when I ha it out to
replace the water pump. I've had this problem for most of the time I've
owned it and I bought it new in 91.

As for the anti freeze smell. If there was any spilled on the motor and not
washed off it will take a long time for the smell to go away. Try washing
the motor and see if it goes away.
