I actually prefer the old Shankle manual choke device--I connected mine
using a separate cable so as to retain the throttle. It is only necessary
to choke while starting; in a few moments after it's running one can
release the knob to full lean--at least on my Spica (now that I think about
it, perhaps I have it a bit rich). I don't know why the TAs are so
expensive, although I can remember that they were out of sight even in the
seventies--new or rebuilt.
