tach

Can anyone offer suggestions regarding a tach that has stopped functioning?
The tach cable checks out ok in that, after disconnecting it from the water
pump, the tach will function by spinning the cable.  However, when the cable
is re-connected to the water pump, the tack still will not work.  I inserted a
spare piece of cable wire into the water pump end, and the cable does not
spin.  Is there something in that water pump receiving end that could be a
problem.  Any fix?  Thanks
