Re: Crane ignitions

Hi James:

To install the shutter wheel you've got to remove the drive dog at the bottom of the drive shaft. Then withdraw the shaft from the distributor body, and slide the wheel up from the bottom. Very simple, just take note of where the washers are supposed to be. There's plenty of room inside the disty to install the optical trigger. Installing the Crane in a Marelli is a quick job, as compared to installing one in an old Bosch 041, 044, or 045 (very little room inside those).

Here's a link to an i Saluti article that may assist you further:

BTW, I think the Crane system works very well, but the provided instructions aren't Alfa-specific, and the initial setup can be problematic. Once it's done, I think the system makes a noticeable improvement. I've had a Crane XR3000/LX91/Bosch 041 on my car for about 18 months, with no trouble.

Subject: Crane ignitions

Has anyone successfully fit one of the Crane optical ignitions onto
a Marelli "big cap" (advance weights above the points) distributor?
It looks like the advance weight plate has to come off, but it also
looks like it's peened to the shaft.

Since I suspect the answer is "don't bother", would anyone care to buy
an unused XR700 kit from me ($100, $40 off IAP's price)? I presume it
will fit a small cap distributor just fine. From the looks of the kit,
it should fit a Bosch, too.
