John,
please don't be mad at your spider.
i dont know what year your spider is, but you must
realize that its gearbox was designed back before
many auto makers even knew what synchromesh
was. back in the 50's, alfa's gearboxes were a revelation
in easy shifting. your eclipse is a modern japanese
appliance mobile and was built long after many of
today's technologies were mastered. but even
the synchros in modern cars do wear out. every
japanese, german, british, and italian car that i have
owned, and built before '82, has had weak 2nd gear
synchros.
the fun of driving a classic alfa, or any classic, includes
the mastering of its idiosyncrasies. even if your spider
is a '90, it is still pretty much a '66 giulia underneath,
which is not far removed from a '50's giulietta. so
even if it is fairly new, it is classic at heart and deserves
to be respected in those terms.
have fun and welcome to the club !
