You maintain throttle position, but the engine speed doesn't stay
constant.  As soon as you clutch in, the engine revs higher because
the load goes away.  The amount of increase corresponds quite nicely
with what you need in the lower gear.  Of course, as you re-engage,
you no doubt have to tip in a bit more throttle to keep the revs
up.  But the exact matching during reengagement depends on whether
you're accelerating, decelerating, or holding speed.  I think Fred
skipped this last part.
