dents in spider hoods

The sump guard on my '84 spider seems to prevent hood dents very
effectively.  Last year a friend took the car for a spin and attempted to
straddle a manhole cover on a street that had been stripped for
repaving.  He broke the guard and a few cooling fins on the sump (ouch),
but created no oil cap-shaped dents.

If only I could prevent reckless SUV drivers from denting the spider's
nose while parallel parking...
