'93 Spider steering problem?

I was pulling out of my driveway this morning, and had the steering at
full lock. As I went over the bump at the bottom, I heard a loud 'snap'
sound from what sounded like the right front suspension.

I got out of the car, and looked underneath - nothing obvious broken. I
drove the car for a short ride and it seemed to feel OK. While it was
parked I wiggled the wheel and it felt "connected", i.e. I felt the
resistance of the tires gripping the pavement. Nothing felt loose. But
then when I get out of the car, I noticed that the steering wheel was
pointing at about 9 O'clock but the wheels were still pointing straight.
I reached over the door from outside the car, and wiggled the steering
wheel again - and watched the tire wiggle perfectly in tandem with the
steering wheel.

Then I got back in the car and noted that when the steering wheel was
centered, the car was going straight...

So what could have happened? Did something break? Could the steering box
be shot?

I'm planning on driving it to my mechanic tomorrow (50 mile drive) based
on the fact that it feels OK on the road. I will surely take it easy on
the highway, though... I won't feel comfortable driving the car until
my mechanic at least looks it over. But I'm wondering what the possible
problems are...

Thanks
-Glenn
