Re:Excessive Oil Consumption

Jon Pike Says "So, the car is drinking a quart every 100 miles, and makes
most of it's
visible smoke when you deaccelerate with the throttles closed, then
open them..

I have the idea this is leaky valve guides... (correct me if I'm wrong)"

Could be any number of serious things......BUT before you pull it to bits it
is just possible you have a terminally blocked engine breather circuit which
is allowing the block to get pressured up and pushing the oil past the pistons
and out through the exhaust valves. I had this in a (dreadful) Austin Montego
which had a PO who only drove gently. When I gave it its first 'Italian tune
up' it left a smoke screen any Naval Destroyer would have been proud of when I
took my foot off after a fast section. I thought I'd blown it up, but no, it
was just a blocked breather circuit which I cleaned and it never did it
again.

It may be more serious of course, but this is well worth a try first.
