Re: spider gas vapors
Nsaldana21 writes about gas vapors noticeable from the cockpit of his spider.
The problem you are experiencing seems common to spiders that are equipped
with the vapor recovery system that you described in your digest post. The
trunk-mounted black plastic tank is a vapor condensor that collects gas
vapors from the fuel tank and controls their emission into the atmosphere.
Your system is broken. There are several places that gasoline vapors may be
getting airborne, one of the most suspect is the plastic one-way valve that
is positioned next to the vapor tank, heading towards the engine. This valve
allows fresh air to resolve negative pressure (vacuum) in the fuel tank, but
prevents fuel vapors escaping from the circuit. Check all the plumbing
connections in this area. The vapors that are created, positive fuel tank
pressures resulting from fuel heating and expanding are handled by this
system to avoid atmospheric pollution and unpleasant odors. Maybe check the
rubber fill boot, as errant fuel that drips from the fill-up nozzle may find
their way into your trunk if the seal around the filler tube has been
compromised. The thin tube that carries the excess fuel vapors to the
crankcase ventilation hose is metal as it passes over the intake manifold's
water jacket. These two merging vapor recovery systems are analogous, they
capture vapors, condense them and distribute the liquids back to where they
originate (fuel tank, crankcase) The volatiles are ducted to the intake tract
where they are entered into the combustion mix and burned. The black canister
that receives the crankcase (blowby) gasses is the oil vapor separator.
Liquid oil from this source is shunted back to the crankcase through the
dipstick pipe. Maintain this system as it is good for the environment and it
is more pleasant to smell the roadside blooms than the 94 octane.
