I'm a big fan of Tirerack.com   Looking at the 185/70 R14s there isn't 
much to choose from.   Using http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html 
to come up with some other sizes: 195/65 R14s are only .9% different in 
circumference, and yield a few more choices.   195/60 R14 which is 4.1% 
smaller seems to yield the most tires to choose from.

Since I don't have any experience with tires for a spider, I'll avoid 
any specific recommendations...  With a 79 spider you need to consider 
look, ride height and steering effort(can't go too wide) in addtion to 
grip/feel/etc.
