Peugeot 505 - Non-alfa help requested

Hi there
Sorry for non-alfa content but the question is fairly generic and I 
think someone else on the list has a Peugeot.  Driving home last 
night, temp gauge is suddenly heading for red zone, warning light 
comes on.  I had just turned the heater on for the first time in a 
few months, only blowing cold air, usually very hot.  I pull over, 
lots of coolant in header tank, seems none is lost.  Engine block 
seems hot, radiator is cold.  Set off again, same thing, gauge 
heading to red, not actually getting there (no more warning light) so 
able to get home.  Check again - engine hot, radiator cool, no heat 
from heater.....
I am thinking water pump, blocked heater?  It seemed strange that it 
didnt totally overheat.  Anyone able to make a better guess?
