We're Back!

Ladies and gentlemen, we are back from our cross country jaunt.

If you recall, I drove a '86 Alfa Romeo GTV6 from Toronto to Winnipeg.
I bought the car for my cousin Stan. He found me a '73 911T with 2.7l
motor in British Columbia and drove it to meet me in Winnipeg. When we
got there, we were *supposed* to switch cars and drive home.

Now, get ready for the punch line. We never switched cars. I couldn't
get the 911 away from Stan. And me, I fell in love with the Alfa. I
knew I was in trouble when I took the 911 on a couple of tire
screetching slalom runs and Stan got mad because I was abusing "his"
car. So we worked a deal and Stan drove home in the 911 and I drove
home in the Alfa.

About 8500 kms total for the two of us. I made the round trip in four
days. Stan took the scenic route and did it in five. A hell of a test
drive.

My drive in the Alfa was flawless except for two minor incidents - 1) a
crow committed suicide against my driver's side mirror, taking it clean
off, 2) parking brake cable broke on the return trip and started making
a hell of a racket against the drive shaft. I had to make a hasty
roadside repair. The Alfa is one great driving machine and I could tell
it was thanking me for four days of high speed freedom after spending
the past 16 years in the stop and go traffic of Toronto. I used 1 litre
of oil over 4200 kms. Not bad, eh?

Stan's 911 adventure was a little more eventful. He broke down on a
desolate stretch of Alberta highway and had to be towed 200 kms. Turned
out to be a loose ignition ground.

Thanks to both the Alfa and Porsche lists for your support. Special
thanks to Livio, Jens, Zsolt and Don S. for their phone calls and
assistance during Stan's crisis. I'm going back to bed now.
