Changing brake M/C - was wobbly 164 front end

The urethane A arm bushes are on their way and I have now fitted a new
brake master cylinder.
Whoever decided where to put the thing either was last in the queue for
space or first there. Everything is in the way.
After installing it it was time to bleed all the air out and flush in nice
new brake juice so I installed the pressure bleed thing on top of the
reservoir and opened the front bleed screws and watched nothing at all come
out. Pressing the brake pedal to encourage things also did nothing except
make a wheezy noise.
Bleeding the air from the new M/C to the ABS unit on both pipes worked,
lots of squirty hissing happening there.
Back to the pedal - now firm as expected.
Opening the front bleed screws again did nothing until I pressed the pedal,
when they squirted as expected, new juice going in each press of the pedal.
When not pressing the pedal, nothing was coming out of either side.

Does this sound OK or indicative of the flex. hoses being bunged up?

If the flex. hoses were the original cause of the jamming brakes I might
have wasted 70 quid on a new master cylinder. As I am from Yorkshire I will
not be impressed.

( For those of you who don't know, a Yorkshireman is described as a
Scotsman deprived of all his natural generosity.)
