stainless steel

The reason that you will see rust appear on some stainless Alfa bumpers, and
trim, is that all stainless steel is not the same. 300 series s.s. is
rustproof, and is what you will find good quality restaurant equipment made
of. It is also very expensive. 400 series offers the lightness of weight
(you can use a light gauge and have the strength of thicker plain steel) ,
and economy (as opposed to stamped steel and chrome plating) in a less
expensive alloy choice. However, it is rust resistant, but not rustproof.
You really need to keep some wax on it. I just went out and checked the
bumper on my TI, which is stainless steel. Sure enough, it is 400 series.
How can you tell the difference? Visually, you can't. However, a magnet
tells the tale. The more expensive 300 series is non-magnetic. If you have
a stainless part, and a magnet sticks, it is 400 series but stainless steel
nontheless.
