"One bit of advice to pass-on: Cammisa recently saw a 164LS serpentine drive
belt that broke and took-out the T-belt (and $4K worth of valves). He
advised watching the serpentine belt, and the associated bearings that it
runs on, for noises and wear."
It HAS happened more than once. If you own a 24 valve 164, and intend to
hang onto it, for goodness sake don't skimp on the belt drives. You can get
away with it elsewhere, but not on the front end of that motor! Always
invest in new belts, new tensioners, AND idler pulleys when rebuilding. And
get it done by someone who knows how to set the tensioners correctly. A good
practice, once you get it right, is to take the car in annually for a
thorough inspection of the belt drives and induction system. Just a former
owner's two-pence...
