Spider rear gear ratio change, 1980 to 4.10:1...

In response:

I believe the change to 4.10:1 ratio was 1980 model year
just prior to switch to Bosch fuel injection.

I have a '86 with the 4.10 and previously had a '78 with
the 4.55. I believe the gear ratios are the same but
the '78 was MUCH more fun to drive than the '86! Fifth
gear in the '86 is for highway cruising only. The '86
always feels slightly behind the power curve even in the
lower gears usually requiring a downshift before any
meaningful acceleration.

Of course the 4.10:1 MPG is slightly better and it's
much quieter but I always enjoyed the impressive 'snap'
the '78 seemed to have in all gears. The '78 had
slightly better acceleration with ratios and overall
gearing better matched to the powerband. The '78 just
had a faster and more responsive feel than
the 'Americanized' '86 Spider Veloce. I miss it!

Subject: Spider rear axle ratios

Anyone know which years the 2-liter Spider had a taller
rear axle ratio
than the 4,55 that was used in the '60s and early '70s?
As I recall, at
some point they went to a 4.10 or lower, which I want to
avoid.

Thanks,
