I have not seen a reply to your question, although I am still 10 days behind 
in reading the digests.

You should not have to take the gas tank out to replace the filler boot.  It 
comes in from the filler door easily, although getting all of the pieces in 
place is somewhat tricky, particularly the drain hose.

My after market one had to be trimmed to make it fit, so if it doesn't work 
immediately, do some measuring, so you will want to try to get the old one 
out in as few pieces as possible.
