Spider Battery
Ian,
My battery is in the trunk on the drivers side (LHD). This is on a 71
Spider due to the air conditioning installation. It is placed in a battery
box and secured with a rubber strap snugged up to the "step" towards the
forward portion of the trunk, looking from behind the car. During a sudden
violent deceleration it seems possible to me that it will tip forward, but I
am not at the stage with the car to experience this potential. The cable is
routed to the starter strapped to the rigid fuel lines. I would suggest
using a one gauge cable since the total length needed is around ten to eleven
feet. Also, the negative cable might as well be one gauge, and in mine is
grounded to one of the left hand shock mounting bolts accessible from the
trunk.
A friend has suggested that I take the negative cable all the way to the
engine block for optimum grounding. Brian Shorey has recommended to me via
the digest to leave the battery in the trunk if I uninstall the A/C,
presumably because of the weight benefits. Hope this helps.
As for Dan and his Sprite question, I say go for it, as long as you are
comfortable doing what needs to be done. These cars turn heads on a par with
Alfa's. Just remember that you must be prepared to deal with a completely
different mindset regarding engineering solutions. I can attest to this
since my next door neighbor has been restoring a 75 TR6 at roughly the same
time as I have been involved with my Spider. It is needless, although fun to
say, which one I think is more elegant between the two!
