Hi Pat:
You mentioned that you wanted to keep pretending that your Spider had no
points, so you wouldn't have to fix them. Well, I think you can, because
'80 Spiders don't have points. They have the Marelli Plex electronic
ignition.
You also mentioned that you changed the cap and wires. Check your new
spark plug wires. I'll bet you have them positioned wrong. Correct firing
order is 1-3-4-2, but I can't tell you where #1 is on the cap. Check the
order and move the wires around the cap until you get #1 in the correct
place (there are only 4 possibilities, right?). #1 is probably the
terminal closest to the radiator, but might also be the one closest to the
right fender. Also check to see that the rotor is properly installed and
that the cap is firmly seated on the distributor body.
