mounting headlight covers

My Spider keeps breaking the plastic rear mounting tabs on its Carello 
headlight covers.

Does anyone have any good ideas for an improved mounting system?  I've been 
looking at pictures of TZ's and the like, which have several small metal 
mounting brackets, wonder if anyone else has contemplated using something 
like that.

Since the paint's only about 8 months old, I hate to drill holes, but 
replacing these expensive covers is ridiculous.
