Starter Questions

The 1969 1750 Spider arrived from LA last Wednesday. I drove it home
without any real problems, but when I switched it off in my driveway, it
refused to start. The headlights dim when I twist the key, but the
starter doesn't spin. I suspect the starter or the solenoid.

Can I fit the starter and solenoid from the 1979 Spider 2000? It looks
like the two cars have different ring gears, so perhaps the starter from
the 1979 Spider 2000 will not work properly in the 1750.

I used to have a BMW 2000 Coupe that I started with a screwdriver across
the solenoid terminals. Is there any reason not to try this (carefully)
on the Alfa? If this doesn't work, does anyone have any recommendations
with respect to shops to rebuild the starter. I'm still near Albany,
New York.
