re: Spider safety options -> Yo Russ Neely

Hey Russ -

Will you also send your AutoPower notes on the removable race-legal (at
least that's how I interpreted it in a quick read) bar my way? We have
what is turning out to be a BUNCH of people who are interested in tracking
their Spiders and -- I'm embarrassed to admit it, because it's partly my
fault for advertising our events at my office -- Mazda Miatas at our
track days and they are not eligible to register because either:
	a) the diagonal cross brace requirement is not met
	b) there remains a question of mounting the support in the lower
1/3 of the vertical bar
	c) there is questionable fore-aft support -- how many supports for
the given hoop
	d) the bar does not clear the driver's and passenger's *helmet*
(it might only clear the head) by 2"

I suppose it would help if folks actually *read* the competition
requirement....

Some people (there are at least two on this list who are probably
following this thread) want to be able to remove the bar assembly after
driving at the track. My personal query is, can you make a sufficiently
rigid and safe bar assembly that will meet the AROC competition
requirements if it's just bolted in through floor mountings? Do you have
to weld in supports for the mounts then? Would the procedure be
different for different series' spiders since some have the package
shelf and some do not? When I bought an Autopower rollbar for my Series
3, I couldn't figure out how in the world to mount the thing without
ruining my interior and finally just sold it to someone with an earlier
Spider. (Actually I'm more comfortable driving at the track in a hardtop,
and I'd kind of like to put a roll bar in it, as well.)

If we can point people to a standard bar assembly (say posted on the web),
they would be SO HAPPY.

My apologies if I missed a part of the thread where you discussed this already.

p.s. I'm kinda frustrated myself because the surgeon doesn't want me
driving for *at least* another three months .... One can only do so much
gardening before going stir-crazy ....
