What Fred DiM. says is true.  In fact, glue the gasket to the sump with 3M
Super Weatherstrip Adhesive, and I would then recommend using a modern,
silicon base sealant on the top side (sparingly!).  This way the sump can be
dropped in the future and the gasket will remain reuseable.  This works
great, by the way, on cam cover gaskets, which are regularly removed to
adjust valves.

Cleanliness is important!
